Maharashtra Government had Renamed Ahmednagar as ‘Ahilyanagar’
Ahilyanagar: Recently the Maharashtra Cabinet has announced its decision to rename Ahmednagar district as ‘Ahilya Nagar’, in in honour of the 18th-century Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar.The proposal to rename Ahmedabad to the name of first announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in May 2023, on the occasion of the 298th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar. The renaming ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalka, where the Maharashtra government had also approved the 6 other changes, which is regarding the renaming of seven railway stations in Mumbai, which previously had British-era names. The approved changes to the Mumbai locality names are as follows: Curry Road has been renamed Lalbaug, Sandhurst Road is now Dongri, Marine Lines takes on the name Mumbadevi, Cotton Green transforms into Kalachowki, Charni Road becomes Girgaon, Dockyard Road is now Mazgaon, and King Circle is rebranded as Tirthakar Parshivnath.

Ahilyabai Holkar was the Rani of Indore, within the Maratha Confederacy where she established Maheshwar (in Madhya Pradesh) as the seat of the Holkar Dynasty after the demise of her husband Khande Rao Holkar and father-in-law Malhar Rao Holkar. She is well known for his religious works where she embellished and beautified various sites including Kashi, Gaya, Somnath, Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kanchi, Avanti, Dwarka, Badrinarayan, Rameshwar and Jaganathpuri as per the Bharatiya Sanskritikosh. About her, a woman revolutionary named Annie Besant exclaimed “Far and wide the roads were planted with shady trees, and wells were made, and rest-houses for travellers. The poor, the homeless, and the orphaned were all helped according to their needs. The Bhils, who had long been the torment of all caravans, were routed from their mountain fastnesses and persuaded to settle down as honest farmers. Hindus and Musalman alike revered the famous Queen and prayed for her long life,”
