The festival is showing 232 films from 43 countries over 10 days. The opening ceremony was held at the Sori Arts Center in Jeonju, about 190 kilometres south of Seoul. The festival opened with the Japanese film “All the Long Nights,” directed and written by Miyake Sho. The film, based on a novel, tells the story of a woman dealing with premenstrual syndrome and her colleague who has panic disorder. This movie had its world premiere at the festival. The festival will close with the Canadian drama “Matt and Mara,” directed by Kazik Radwanski. This film is about Mara, a young professor in a troubled marriage, who reconnects with Matt, a man from her past.

The festival will run for 10 days and features 232 films from 43 countries. The opening film is the Japanese movie “All the Long Nights,” directed and written by Miyake Sho, which tells the story of a woman dealing with premenstrual syndrome and her colleague who suffers from panic disorder. This film had its world premiere at the festival. The opening ceremony featured actors Gong Seung-yeon and Lee Hee-jun as co-hosts, who waved to spectators and officially launched the 25th edition of the Jeonju International Film Festival on May 1, 2024.The closing film will be the Canadian drama “Matt and Mara,” directed by Kazik Radwanski, which explores the rekindling of tensions and uncertainties when a young professor in a strained marriage reunites with a man from her past. Among the 232 movies screened, 82 will have their global premieres at the festival. Notable films include Shin Kyoung-soo’s “When We Bloom Again,” which focuses on the 2014 Sewol Ferry tragedy that claimed over 300 lives, mostly high school students. Another highlighted film is the Austrian documentary “Favoriten,” which delves into the themes of teaching and learning. The festival’s Special Focus section will showcase all 10 instalments of director Tsai Ming-Liang’s “Walker Series” in cinemas for the first time worldwide, including the latest addition, “Abiding Nowhere.” The series, inspired by the monk Xuanzang from the Chinese classic “Journey to the West,” features actor Lee Kang-Sheng portraying a walker moving slowly and barefoot through various cities around the world. In the J Special section, director Hur Jin-ho will present two of his films, “One Fine Spring Day” (2001) and “April Snow” (2005), as part of the “Programmer of the Year” series. This section allows a chosen individual to showcase their cinematic perspectives and tastes through a curated selection of films. Additionally, three other movies, “The March of Fools” (1975), “Paris, Texas” (1984), and “Tokyo Story” (1953), will be screened as part of this segment.
