Cyclone Mocha: Heading toward Bangladesh, Myanmar coast
Cyclone Mocha: As the cyclone is reaching to Bangladesh, the state had issued emergency for evaluation, preparedness and hazard awareness among locals. On Saturday, the authorities in Bangladesh instructed hundreds of thousands of individuals residing on the southeastern coastlines to evacuate due to an extremely perilous tropical cyclone that was anticipated to hit the country. The cyclone, named “Mocha,” is expected to be one of the strongest cyclones to strike Bangladesh in almost twenty years and poses a threat to the world’s largest Rohingya refugee camp. The cyclone is expected to hit near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Sunday.
Bangladesh history with cyclone
Bangladesh has a tragic history of being struck by deadly cyclones, some of which have caused massive devastation and loss of life. One of the worst of these was the 1970 Bhola cyclone, which hit East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India’s West Bengal, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 500,000 people. Another catastrophic event was the Bangladesh cyclone of 1991, which lasted from April 22-30, and claimed the lives of roughly 139,000 individuals after striking near Chittagong.
In recent years, Bangladesh has continued to experience powerful and destructive cyclones. Sitrang occurred on October 23-24, 2022, followed by Jawad from December 3-6, 2021, and Gulab:shaheen Gu between September 24 and October 4, 2021. The Yaas cyclone is another example, which struck in May 2021 and left a trail of destruction across several states in India and Bangladesh. These tragic events serve as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and the need for effective strategies to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.
What had been happening in Bangladesh
Authorities in Bangladesh and Myanmar have taken measures to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people as a severe cyclone, named Cyclone Mocha, approaches the Bay of Bengal. They have urged people to stay away from the coastal regions as the storm is expected to make landfall on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the cyclone will bring wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour, with gusts reaching 175 kph (110 mph) between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Kyaukpyu in Myanmar. The authorities have issued warnings and have urged residents in vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions. They are working to ensure that evacuation and rescue operations are conducted smoothly and that emergency measures are in place. Bangladesh, in particular, has a history of being hit by devastating cyclones, resulting in the loss of many lives and causing widespread damage to infrastructure. The Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh are also at risk from the approaching storm. It is hoped that the measures being taken will help minimize the impact of Cyclone Mocha and prevent any loss of life or property damage.
