Ram Arun Govil wins his Meerut : Actor Arun Govil, famous for playing Lord Ram in the popular TV series Ramayan, won the Meerut Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. This was his first time running in the Lok Sabha elections after joining the BJP in 2021. Arun Govil received 5,46,469 votes, beating his main competitor, SP’s Sunita Varma, who got 5,35,884 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party’s Devvrat Kumar Tyagi got 87,025 votes. He replaced Rajendra Agarwal, a three-time BJP MP who had held the Meerut seat since 2014. Earlier this year, Govil attended an event in Ayodhya organized by the BJP, which invited various film and television celebrities. Arun Govil campaigned with three main promises: to build an airport in Meerut, construct a sports stadium, and complete the city’s ring road to improve commuting.

He started his film career in 1977 with the movie Paheli and gained fame with movies like Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979) and Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin (1979). He also acted in popular films like Jiyo To Aise Jiyo (1981), Himmatwala (1983), Dilwaala (1986), and Govinda Govinda (1994). Arun made his TV debut in Ramanand Sagar’s Vikram Aur Betaal (1985) and later starred as Lord Rama in the iconic series Ramayan. This role brought him significant recognition and led to other notable roles, including Harishchandra in Vishwamitra and Buddha in the TV series Buddha. He voiced Rama in the Indo-Japanese animation film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama (1992). Arun joined the BJP in 2021 and won his first Lok Sabha election in 2024, representing the Meerut constituency.
